POSITRON EMISSION TOMOGRAPHY (PET)

This method has been highly appreciated and widely used for practical diagnosing of different cancer diseases.

Using the PET it is possible to diagnose definitely the tumors with size from 1 cm that have no any clinical effects, and as well to differentiate benign tumors from malignant ones.

The PET can be also used for diagnosing of heart diseases (portions of the heart muscle with impaired blood supply) and diseases of brain (epilepsy, Alzheimer's disease, consequences of injuries, ischemic disorders, etc.).

The Positron Emission Tomography itself shall not provide for radiopharmaceuticals (labeled glucose) accumulation focuses detection.

For this purpose it shall be used together with Computed Tomography (CT).

The CT provides the detailed anatomic image of the examined area, while the PET shows the presence of the functional processes being examined (for example, tumor growth).

Such examination is called PET-CT.
